Lockage Services

While many cruisers passing through the area have charts and guides that are fairly good at keeping them in navigable waters and reaching reliable facilities, few boaters have experienced the inspiring task of locking through a lock system such as the those used in transiting the shoals region. The most notable of the locks in the system is the main chamber at Wilson Dam. At 110 feet wide, 600 feet long and a single lift of more than 90 feet, typically in less that 30 minutes, this lock offers a real experience. When the valves are opened and the water begins to churn, being in the correct location and properly tied off are key to being able to enjoy the experience rather than fighting the lines and the walls. Many times pleasure craft share the lock and not all are as prepared as they should be. Staying alert of the activity and knowing your options are important.

You should also be aware that many of the locks have outages during the summer months to provide maintenance opportunities. Depending on the lock and the maintenance required, some of the outages may last several weeks.

If you simply have questions and want to discuss lockage or if you would prefer a guide through your first time, we are prepared to help.
